“Why do you struggle so mightily in the present for the immediate
future, if the struggle is not worthy of record?  Where can these
records and relics be kept where they will be available to all, but
in the custody of an historical society dedicated to that
purpose?” – Howard Cooke, first president of the Athol Historical
Society.

So thought a small group of citizens who gathered in the
directors’ room of the Athol Co-operative Bank on July 25, 1953.
They formed the Athol Historical Society, which was incorporated
December 14, 1953.  Mrs. Eida Limbach Waterman provided free
quarters to the Society until September 9, 1957, at which time
your Historical Society purchased from the Town of Athol, for one
dollar, the old Town Hall at the corner of Main and Liberty Streets.
The second floor of the building houses the majority of our
museum items.  We have many displays including military items,
clothing, furniture, photographs, books, and many items of local
interest.  Our museum is open to the public every Sunday in July
and August from 1 PM until 3 PM.

The building is the oldest public building in Athol.  Over the past
few years numerous fundraising activities have taken place to aid
in restoring this 175-year-old structure.   With the help of the
membership, local businesses, along with town and state grant
monies we are well on our way.

The program committee has scheduled a variety of events for the
2005 season with the hope of increasing visitors to our museum.
